After the high-speed Sailormade Dayracer 29 introduced last year, Dynamic Elements will introduce a slightly more modest variation of this boat, the Sailormade 30, at BOOT Düsseldorf. This dayracer will be a good alternative, especially for weekenders. Because of the properties of Esthec, the Sailormade 30 and an Esthec deck are a perfect match.

According to the shipbuilder Alexander Berg of Dynamic Elements, Esthec is the product of the future. Alexander Berg: “We really believe in it. The product is a perfect match for a modern daysailer like this one.  One of the latest projects of Satellite Yacht Design has been equipped with Esthec^®. The Axonite 69 is a large high quality sailing yacht built by K&M Yachtsbuilders in the Netherlands. Both the interior and exterior design are modern and contemporary: it differs from the traditional board pattern and color. It is Guido de Groot Design who decided on a bold multiple color design that breaks with tradition. Axonite 69 is intended to be used as an around the world vessel and the client therefore had specific requirements. Guido de Groot Design has been involved in many refits on sail yachts, the Axonite 69 however is the first sail powered new build that the design bureau has worked on from scratch. Not all designers are already comfortable with using innovative materials for deck and interior design. Young students of different universities have experienced Esthec as an innovative product, of which the future is bright and promising. Several upcoming designers participated in a design contest that was held during the Italian Seatec exhibition. The majority of the participants decided on the sustainable and ecological composite decking material, gratefully taking advantage of the freedom in colour and design Esthec offers. The future designers are not limited by thinking of teak only. On the contrary, they are very open minded about innovative alternatives.

Esthec uses the one-liner ‘Esthec – the Future’ in some of its publications as a corporate statement concerning environment-friendly solutions, but the students’ choice for Esthec and their designs show that this will become reality too. Beside the fact that it is a very ecologically sounded alternative, Esthec brings many other significant advantages to the table. Among other things it is almost maintenance free, it has a constant quality and is lightweight. Since Esthec does not derive from nature, one is not restricted to a plank pattern. The King of Woods has always been teak. But there’s a problem with teak, maybe a big one. The era of teak at sea may at last be coming to an end, the victim of environmental concerns and ironically human rights. Because of its aesthetic appeal, teak is still the wood of choice for superyachts, even those yachts designed to exceptionally high environmental standards, like ETHEREAL. ‘Teak is a matter of mentality; teak feels good on your feet and, for whatever reason, most people aren’t happy if you use any material they think is inferior, they want the best’, says Fincantieri’s John Luca Scarpa. ‘But we’re seeing thinner teak decks, simply because it’s getting more difficult to find good teak in long lengths’. And that’s the problem.

‘In the superyacht industry it’s a mindset; if you say ‘deck’, they hear ‘teak’, says Marcel van der Spek of Esthec. ‘Yes, there is an almost magical value to teak, but teak is becoming a serious concern to us’, says Michael Breman of Lurssen, ‘We have enough for our current builds, but we’re working very carefully with our existing stock and reseraching for suitable alternatives. Espen Oeino, designer of some of the world’s biggest and most famous yachts observes much the same.
